OMEGA premieres Planet Ocean in Switzerland

Since 2011, OMEGA has worked alongside the GoodPlanet Foundation raising public awareness of our oceans and sharing its dedication to sustainability.
On May 15 2013, OMEGA celebrated the Swiss premier of Planet Ocean, a landmark new environmental documentary directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michael Pitiot.

The luxury brand hosted a cocktail party and exhibition at La Cité du Temps in Geneva. Guests had the opportunity to look at breath-taking photographs of underwater nature taken by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. More than 200 guests and journalists attended the screening in the Pathé Rex cinema. They were impressed by the film and its strong messages in support of oceanic health.

The Planet Ocean film, which combines spectacular aerial and underwater images, draws on the talents of the world’s leading underwater cinematographers, oceanographers and biologists. It was created to change the way people look at the oceans and to encourage them to imagine conservation and stewardship as responsibilities shared by everyone on earth.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand, one of the world’s best-known environmental activists and filmmakers, said of his partnership with OMEGA: “When OMEGA proposed the Planet Ocean project to me, I accepted almost immediately; it was time to look at things directly, to illustrate and to denounce the dangers threatening our oceans and therefore our planet. This documentary is not intended to moralize, but rather to raise consciousness.”

OMEGA, which invented the first diving watch in 1932, has a long legacy of creating timepieces that help explore and enjoy the oceans. With that history in mind, OMEGA funded Planet Ocean and commissioned acclaimed photographer, filmmaker and environmentalist Arthus-Bertrand and his non-profit organization, GoodPlanet, to create a film with the goal of raising awareness of ocean conservation.

OMEGA returns as IAAF Diamond League Official Timekeeper

OMEGA, widely known for its role as Official Timekeeper at the Olympic Games, will continue to extend the same services to the IAAF Diamond League circuit in its 2013 season. OMEGA has been the Diamond League’s Official Timekeeper since its inaugural season in 2010.

The IAAF Diamond League is an annual series of one-day meets (plus a two-day meet in London in July) that intends, as one of its main goals, to enhance the worldwide appeal of athletics. The 14 meetings planned for 2013 will again include the most prestigious events on the European athletics calendar along with meetings in China and the United States and will kick off its ambitious schedule in Doha, Qatar on the 10th of May.
Stephen Urquhart, the president of OMEGA, said, “We are looking forward to timing the performances of the talented men and women competing in the international IAAF Diamond League meetings again this season. We already know many of these top athletes through our association with the Olympic Games and we are pleased to be part of this initiative which has played such an important role in bringing world-class athletics to an even wider audience.”

In addition to its timekeeping and data handling activities at some of the world’s highest-profile sporting events, OMEGA has been responsible for the development of much of the key technology in sports timing, including the Scan’O’Vision photofinish camera with its ability to “photograph time”.

OMEGA’s timekeepers and data handlers will deploy the same state-of-the-industry equipment Diamond League meetings in 2013 that was used to time every event at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Olympic Games in London marked the 25th time OMEGA had served as Official Timekeeper and the brand has extended its agreement with the International Olympic Committee through 2020.

OMEGA premieres Planet Ocean in Vancouver

OMEGA presents special screening of the
film Planet Ocean at the Vancouver Aquarium.

Co-director Michael Pitiot makes special guest appearance at the May 9th event

Swiss watchmaker OMEGA aptly chose the Vancouver Aquarium as the venue for a special screening of Planet Ocean, and the launch of the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GoodPlanet watch. The landmark 90-minute environmental documentary was directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michael Pitiot. It draws on the talents of some of the world’s leading aerial and underwater cinematographers, oceanographers and biologists, and was created to help change the way people look at the oceans and to encourage them to imagine conservation and stewardship as responsibilities shared by everyone on Earth.
Guests attending the event included Vancouver area media dignitaries, students and faculty from the University of British Columbia department of Oceanography, as well as special guest, Co-Director Michael Pitiot.
OMEGA, which invented the first diving watch in 1932, has a long legacy of creating timepieces that help explore and enjoy the oceans. With that history in mind, OMEGA funded Planet Ocean and commissioned acclaimed photographer, filmmaker and environmentalist Arthus-Bertrand and his non-profit organization, GoodPlanet, to create a film with the goal of raising awareness for protecting the oceans. OMEGA and GoodPlanet formed a partnership in 2011 with the aim to raise awareness of the beauty and majesty of the oceans, the dangers they face and the importance of preserving and appreciating these natural resources.
To help promote the film, OMEGA has created a watch - the GoodPlanet Planet Ocean. OMEGA has committed a portion of the proceeds from the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GoodPlanet to preserve the mangroves and seagrasses in Southeast Asia and educate the local population about conserving these important natural resources.
Planet Ocean, which premiered at Earth Summit 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, is made available free of charge to any interested NGO in order to ensure that it reaches the widest possible audience.
About Michael Pitiot
Born in Bagneux, France on July 14, 1970, Michael Pitiot filmed his first documentaries in Africa while traveling through Niger, Mali, and Mauritania, and through the forests of Zaire, Burundi and Rwanda. In 2011 Michael Pitiot began writing a new film with journalist Daniel Duhand on the sinking of the ocean liner “Afrique,” which was the largest shipwreck recorded off the coasts of France. That same year, Yann Arthus-Bertrand asked Pitiot to co-produce his Planet Ocean documentary. It is a plea for world governance of the oceans – a “vision” of this planet, born from the sea and in need of attention today – the same marine world that Michael has never ceased to explore and to love.

BASELWORLD 2013 - The Constellation Sedna

The OMEGA Constellation Sedna is the first watch to be crafted in 18K OMEGA Sedna™ gold. This limited edition wristwatch seamlessly blends the timeless aesthetic appeal of a legendary watch family with the world premiere of an innovative material.

OMEGA Sedna™ gold is the name OMEGA has given to a new alloy that stunningly blends three elements: gold, copper and palladium. It is an 18K rose gold, meaning that it has a minimum gold content of 75%. OMEGA Sedna™’s unique rose colour is a result, in part, of just the right proportion of copper: Its palladium content helps to ensure that the reddish hue of Sedna™ gold will be particularly long lasting. It takes its name from a trans-Neptunian object which astronomers called Sedna – the same name as an Inuit goddess who is said to live at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. The surface of the orbiting object has been described as one of the reddest in our Solar System.

Swatch Group assembled a team of top metallurgists and scientists from several of its companies with the shared goal of creating an 18K rose gold alloy whose colour would be not only beautiful but enduring. OMEGA Sedna™ gold – developed 100% in house by the Swatch Group team – is the patented, breath-taking confirmation of their success.

The OMEGA Constellation Sedna is the first watch to be crafted in 18K Sedna gold. This limited edition wristwatch seamlessly blends the timeless aesthetic appeal of a legendary watch family with the world premiere of an innovative material. 18K Sedna gold, a patented alloy blending gold, copper and palladium, has been created to ensure that the unique rose gold lustre of the watch case will be especially long-lasting. The indexes and hands are also made of 18K Sedna gold, as is the clasp on its strap.

The distinctive timepiece has a polished casebody with a brushed bezel emboldened by tone-in-tone Roman numerals. It has a luxurious silvery “pie-pan” dial inspired by that of the very first Constellation launched in 1952. The timepiece is presented on a strap crafted from fine brown leather. The watch is equipped with OMEGA’s innovative Si14 silicon balance spring and the industry-changing OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8501, visible through a sapphire crystal caseback. With timeless styling, they live up to their name: they are equally at home on the decks of the boats recalled by the distinctive vertical lines on their dials or on dry land.

This year, OMEGA is proud to introduce new Aqua Terra models that include a date window at 6 o’clock as well as a window at 12 o’clock displaying the day of the week. The day and date indications don’t change gradually but jump instantaneously at midnight.

The range of case metal and dial options offered for the Day-Date watches gracefully extends the Seamaster Aqua Terra family.

The Seamaster Aqua Terra Day-Date in subtle stainless steel
An understated member of the Aqua Terra Day-Date family, this model has a case made of sturdy stainless steel with either a matching bracelet or a leather strap. These models are available with blue or black dials and rhodium-plated hands and indexes or with a silvery dial with 18K red gold hands and indexes.

Powering the bicolour and stainless steel models in the Aqua Terra Day-Date collection is the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8602. Equipped with an Si14 balance spring, this COSC-certified chronometer is delivered with a full four-year warranty. The exclusive OMEGA movement is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback.

The OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra Day-Date in 18K red gold and stainless steel
One of the year’s most compelling new watches is the bicolour version of the Seamaster Aqua Terra Day-Date. Its case is made of 18K red gold and stainless steel and the striking timepiece is presented with a brown leather strap and a grey dial. The bicolour Aqua Terra Day-Date has 18K red gold hands and indexes coated with white Super-LumiNova.

The OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra Day-Date in classic 18K red gold
The most luxurious Aqua Terra Day-Date has a 41.50 mm 18K red gold case presented on either a matching bracelet or a brown leather strap. It is available with a silver or a grey dial and features applied 18K red gold brushed and polished indexes coated with white Super-LumiNova. The watch’s central hour, minute and seconds hands are facetted and made of 18K red gold.

At its heart is the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8612. Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, its special luxury finish includes an 18K red gold rotor and balance bridge. OMEGA’s proprietary Co-Axial mechanical movements are widely considered to be among the very best in the world.
BASELWORLD 2013 - The Speedmaster in black ceramic “Dark Side of the Moon”

Emblematic of OMEGA’s bold style, forward-thinking innovation and adventurous spirit, this all-black OMEGA Speedmaster represents a sleek and sporty new addition to the popular collection.

The black zirconium oxide ceramic dial, complemented by a matching ceramic 44.25 mm case with a brushed and polished ceramic casebody, features striking 18K white gold applied indexes as well as two blackened sub-dials that distinguish the timepiece from its legendary predecessor, OMEGA’s “Moonwatch”.

These two sub-dials are made possible by the innovative placement of the 12-hour and 60-minute counters on the same sub-dial at the 3 o’clock position, allowing a comfortable and intuitive chronograph reading.

There is a small seconds sub-dial located at 9 o’clock and a date window at 6 o’clock. The hour and minute Moonwatch-style hands are fashioned from 18K white gold, as are the hands found on both sub-dials; the central chronograph hand is rhodium plated and features a red tip for increased visibility of recorded seconds. Super-LumiNova coats the two dots at 12 and the hour, minute and chronograph hands ensuring that the wearing can read the time in a variety of lighting conditions.

Protecting this prominent dial is a box-form scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides.

The matt chromium nitride tachymeter scale – among the most identifiable design features of the Speedmaster – stands out on the polished ceramic bezel. The two polished ceramic chronograph control pushers on the case function totally independently – accordingly, there is no risk to the chronograph mechanism as a result of inadvertent manipulation.

This unique timepiece is presented on a highly durable black Cordura® fabric strap complete with a black ceramic buckle. The timepiece is water resistant to 5 bar (50 metres / 167 feet).

Powered by the incredibly advanced in-house movement, the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 9300, and equipped with a Si14 silicon balance spring, this Speedmaster is offered with a full four-year warranty.

The dark side of the moon
Engraved on the polished ceramic caseback in matt chromium nitride, above the bevelled scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, are the words “DARK SIDE OF THE MOON” – an appropriate tribute to this Speedmaster’s heritage and its bold black design.

Building upon our past’s great legends
With a design that recalls the same watch that accompanied astronauts to the moon on all six lunar missions, this model is a welcome addition to the family and one that upholds the bold Speedmaster name. It is sure to find a strong following among Speedmaster fans and watch enthusiasts who want to combine the impressive legacy of a remarkable chronograph with the best series-produced mechanical watch movement in the world.

One of the most dramatic technological innovations in recent memory is the OMEGA Co-Axial caliber 8508. It is resistant to magnetic fields greater than 1.5 tesla (15’000 gauss), far exceeding the levels of magnetic resistance achieved by any previous watch movement and solving a problem that has challenged watchmakers for many decades.

The mechanical movement is introduced in the Seamaster Aqua Terra > 15’000 gauss, a 41.50 mm stainless steel Co-Axial chronometer presented on either a matching bracelet or a brown leather strap. It has a slightly yellowed lacquered black dial, sun-brushed from the centre and decorated with the distinctive vertical lines that define OMEGA’s popular Aqua Terra collection. The yellow transferred legend, “> 15’000 GAUSS” identifies the watch as a very special timepiece.

The technology developed by a team of ETA, ASULAB, Nivarox FAR and OMEGA Engineers led to the first prototype of the movement, which has been fitted in an OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra. Unlike other efforts to combat the effects of magnetism, the OMEGA movement does not rely on a protective container inside the watchcase but on the use of selected non-ferrous materials in the movement itself. Several patents are pending for the new movement. Even after exposure to a magnetic field greater than 15’000 gauss, the movement still performs at a chronometric level as defined by COSC.

Magnetism had been dealt previously with inner cases designed to limit the effect of magnetism. This approach with inner cases had some limitations including the facts they couldn’t handle the challenge of the increased strength of permanent magnets and that, from an aesthetic standpoint, they block the view of the movement, thus preventing the possiblility of a date window display.

Because the Seamaster Aqua Terra > 15’000 gauss doesn’t need to be protected by an inner case – the movement itself is anti-magnetic – it has a transparent sapphire crystal in its caseback that allows full view of the Co-Axial caliber 8508. There is also a date window at 3 o’clock.

The Seamaster Aqua Terra > 15’000 gauss is water resistant to 15 bar (150 metres / 500 feet). With the combination of its Co-Axial mechanical movement its Si14 silicon balance spring, it is so reliable that it is delivered with a four-year warranty.

Magnetism has always been an issue for watchmakers and magnets are now even more present in our daily lives than they have ever been before. Watchmakers have to deal regularly with the issue of magnetism, as it is necessary for them to demagnetize mechanical watches whose performance has been compromised by exposure to magnetic fields, a problem that will be solved with the new movement.

With the Seamaster Aqua Terra > 15’000 gauss, OMEGA has introduced innovative technology that will forever change the way the watchmaking industry approaches the ever-increasing challenges of magnetic fields.
