Thomas Björn edges Craig Lee at OMEGA European Masters

Thomas Björn was crowned King of the Mountains for the second time in three years after defeating Scotland’s Craig Lee in a play-off in the OMEGA European Masters in Switzerland.

In addition to his check and trophy, the Dane was given the red championship jacket and a stunning Seamaster Aqua Terra 150 M OMEGA Co-Axial GMT 43 mm chronometer wristwatch by OMEGA president Stephen Urquhart. Mr Urquhart said to Thomas Björn, “This is a large trophy but you know that – you already have one,” a reference to the fact that the golfer also won in Crans-Montana in 2011. Björn holed a 12ft birdie putt on the first extra hole after Craig Lee had earlier agonisingly lipped out with a birdie chance on the final hole in regulation play.

That miss meant they tied on 20 under par after Björn’s six under par 65 and Lee’s 67, with Björn sinking a superb putt in the play-off to claim his 14th European Tour title.

Björn was reflective about his win, saying, “It is a golf course that suits me. I came in and I knew the one good thing about my game was my wedge game and you need that this week. I just stuck to everything I had and I never really let myself down this week. I had that bit between my teeth that made me go that little bit extra.”

While he was disappointed to lose the playoff, Craig Lee was satisfied with his result. “I would certainly have taken second place before the week started,” he said. “Even after the first round when I was level par and border cut line. So I’m delighted with my performance.”

In 2009, the OMEGA European Masters became the first European golf tournament to be co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours, forging a strong bond between two of the world’s most dynamic golfing regions.

OMEGA was delighted once again to share its passion for golf with everyone who came to Crans-Montana for another outstanding edition of the European Masters.
