Crans-sur-Sierre, 4 September 2003 – During the first round of the OMEGA European Masters, Swede Patrick Sjoland scored a hole-in-one which was rewarded with a prestigious OMEGA timepiece.
Sjoland was the very first player to start in the bright morning sunshine in Crans-Montana. Perhaps benefiting from a hidden golfing equivalent of Formula 1's clear track, he attacked the course with vigour, picking up a total of 5 birdies over his first 18 holes. It was undoubtedly his eagle on the eighth hole that caused a sensation. With a slight wind coming from the right, he teed off for the 156 metre shot with a 7-iron which sent the ball straight into the hole on the very first shot played on that hole in the tournament.
Sjoland revealed that this was his ninth hole-in-one, though the first for which he had won a watch. The prestige timepiece in question is a Seamaster Aqua Terra with 18-carat yellow gold case and bracelet. The Aqua Terra collection is fitted with OMEGA's revolutionary Co-Axial Escapement movement, which offers improved long-term accuracy in comparison with the conventional lever escapement. The young Swede was clearly delighted to win the watch and said that it would be the perfect upgrade to his existing OMEGA watch, which his wife bought for him several years ago.
