Emirates Team New Zealand finishes second of the inaugural season of the 2011-2012 America's Cup World Series

Back

America’s Cup racing returned to Newport, RI after an absence of nearly twenty years for the final leg of the 2012 America’s Cup World Series circuit taking place from June 26-July 1 with OMEGA-sponsored Emirates Team New Zealand finishing in second place overall.

Skipper Dean Barker and Emirates Team New Zealand arrived in Newport with the firm ambition of winning the trophy of the America’s Cup World Series, trailing the ORACLE Team USA Spithill by only four points in the combined overall standings.

However, Emirates Team New Zealand encountered some serious challenges during the event which included injuries to two members of the frontline AC45 crew, a collision with a mark boat and a damaging capsize. Nevertheless, Barker and his team bounced back scoring second place in the Friday fleet race and regained confidence on Saturday when they captured a third and a first in the two fleet races.  In spite of the mishaps, Team New Zealand were able to secure second place in the inaugural season behind the ORACLE Team USA Spithill.

OMEGA's long-term partnership with Team New Zealand started with Sir Peter Blake's America's Cup campaign in 1995.  Since 2001, OMEGA has honored Sir Peter's legacy with its support of Emirates Team New Zealand and later to skipper Dean Barker who joined the OMEGA family of ambassadors in 2003. The brand will serve as the Official Timekeeper for Emirates Team New Zealand once again in its upcoming America's Cup campaign in San Francisco, September 7-22, 2013.
