Solar Impulse 2 completes first flight!

Back

On 2 June, Solar Impulse 2 successfully completed its first flight with test pilot Markus Scherdel in the cockpit.

To recognise his contributions to the Solar Impulse project, Claude Nicollier, Head of Flight Test Operations and member of the Swatch Group Board of Directors, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg presented Markus Scherdel with an OMEGA Speedmaster HB-SIA. The unique watch was engraved with the test pilot’s name and the words “First Flight Si2”. Markus Scherdel was also the first pilot to take command of Solar Impulse 1 in 2009.

OMEGA and Solar Impulse
The Solar Impulse project, launched by Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, has set itself the goal of circumnavigating the globe in an airplane powered day and night using nothing but solar energy by 2015. OMEGA has an active role as one of Solar Impulse’s Main Partners, providing both capital support and key technology to a venture that will contribute to the scientific and ecological development of alternative means of sustainable energy. OMEGA’s significant contributions will continue to be an integral part in the Solar Impulse Project’s success in the coming years.
