Rory McIlroy claims an impressive victory at the OMEGA Dubai Desert Classic

Back

At the OMEGA Dubai Desert Classic, Rory McIlroy, the world’s top-ranked golfer, demonstrated that he is ready to dominate the European Tour in 2015, just as he did throughout 2014.

The Northern Irishman, whose last six European Tour starts in 2014 yielded three wins – two of them Majors – and three seconds, finished three shots clear of an impressive field, with a 72-hole total of 22 under par. McIlroy, who is also a brand ambassador for title sponsor OMEGA, went into Sunday’s final round defending a four-stroke lead. His nearest challenger on the leaderboard was Sweden's Alex Noren, who finished the tournament at 19 under par. Stephen Gallacher of Scotland, who had won the two previous editions of the OMEGA Dubai Desert Classic, finished in third place at 16 under par.

The course in Dubai has special significance for Rory McIlroy: his first professional win came at age 19 when he won the Dubai Desert Classic in February of 2009.  That victory elevated him into the top 20 in the world golf rankings; six years later, he is ranked number one, a position he has enjoyed for the last 27 weeks in a row.

Along with the championship trophy and check, McIlroy was presented with an OMEGA Aqua Terra 150M Master Co-Axial wristwatch by the title sponsor. Raynald Aeschlimann, OMEGA's Vice President and Head of International Sales, said, “This has been an extraordinary edition of the OMEGA Dubai Desert Classic. Our friend and ambassador Rory McIlroy is an incredible champion but I also want to extend my congratulations and my gratitude to all of the fantastic golfers who continue to make this the most important tournament in the region.”
