Planet Ocean – Revealing marine majesty

The premiere of Planet Ocean at the Rio+20 Summit presented outstanding aerial and underwater ocean views from across more than 20 countries to illustrate and educate the audience about the beauty covering the surface of our planet and the challenges we have forced upon the marine ecosystems we depend on.

Directors Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michael Pitiot, in partnership with OMEGA, have worked with other activists, scientists and enthusiasts to bring to audiences the 90-minute documentary that serves not only as a prime example of Earth’s beauty, but as an illustration of the dangers that threaten our ocean and our entire planet. It has been created to change the way people look at the oceans and encourages them to imagine conservation as a globally-shared responsibility.

This collaborative film aims to explain some of the planet’s greatest natural mysteries and highlights how essential it is that mankind learns to live in harmony with our oceans. Planet Ocean also serves as a reminder of the bond between humans and nature, and the duty that exists to protect and respect our planet.

OMEGA President Stephen Urquhart explains why the brand chose to work with Yann Arthus-Bertrand, saying, “No one could do it better. Yann is both an environmentalist and the world’s leading specialist in aerial photography. He has a unique combination of skills that have allowed him to capture and communicate the majesty and the beauty of the oceans cinematically. He, Michael and their team have done a remarkable job."

Planet Ocean around the world

Since its premiere in June of 2012, Planet Ocean has been shown to intrigued audiences at events in major cities all over the world. In September 2013, the documentary made its New York debut at the United Nations headquarters in the presence of the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, Yann Arthus-Bertrand and OMEGA President Stephen Urquhart.

“I would like to thank OMEGA…for its efforts to support organizations that strive to protect our oceans and raise awareness of critical environmental issues.” U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon

OMEGA has long been associated with the planet’s oceans and understands the dangers facing them, as well as the importance of their preservation. The partnership between OMEGA and this documentary was created in the spirit of its support for late friend and brand ambassador Sir Peter Blake and its decades-long sport of oceanic health and exploration.
