The Water Edition
This issue of Lifetime, OMEGA’s lifestyle magazine, is dedicated to water, with particular focus on the oceans that cover more than two thirds of the Earth's surface.
Edition 8
Because of our aquatic legacy, water is a fitting subject. In 1932 we created the first true dive watch and in 1974 we introduced the first watch ever certified a marine chronometer – to this day, it is the most accurate wristwatch ever produced. Since the 1930s our watches have been worn underwater by Dr. Charles William Beebe, one of the inventors of the bathysphere, Commander Yves Le Prier, the father of the aqualung, legendary explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Jacques Mayol, the free diver known as "The Dolphin Man".
When the late Sir Peter Blake retired from competition as one of the world's most successful competitive sailors, he committed his energies to the protection of his beloved oceans. This year is the tenth anniversary of Sir Peter's death and we remain committed to his simple motto: "No water, no life". It is to his memory that we dedicate the Water Edition of Lifetime.
Along with a profile of Peter Blake, the magazine includes articles about Olympic swimming great Michael Phelps and golf legend Greg Norman, who was photographed swimming among his namesake great white sharks.
In a piece called "Sea Change", eco-activist Bill McKibben writes about the current state of the oceans and issues a call for environmental action. Some of OMEGA's astronaut ambassadors describe the experience of looking back at the Earth from space – a perspective that few human beings have had the opportunity to enjoy.
There is a story about environmentalist/filmmaker Yann Arthus-Bertrand who has teamed up with OMEGA to produce Planet Ocean, a movie that reminds viewers of the beauty and majesty of the oceans and to raise awareness of what we can all do to help. In "Wings Over Water", Solar Impulse pilot and co-founder André Borschberg considers the challenges the sun-powered plane will face when it flies across oceans.
There is a stunning pictorial featuring world champion free-diver Jana Strain, an illustrated aquatic travel guide and a look at Extreme 40 sailing whose competitions with their dynamic high-speed boats and inshore events bring sailing closer to spectators than ever before.
As usual, there is also lots of OMEGA-specific content including articles about the new Speedmaster Omega Co-Axial, the redesigned Planet Ocean series and a detailed look at dive watches.
In addition to the print editions in English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Japanese, the Water Edition of Lifetime is available in an iPad version.
