The Swiss lever escapement was, deservedly, the mainstay of the mechanical watchmaking industry for more than two centuries. OMEGA’s Co-Axial escapement presents the first serious challenge to its dominance.
At the dawn of the third millennium, OMEGA introduced the Co-Axial escapement, an innovation that redefined the entire practice of mechanical watchmaking.
The escapement is the heart of every mechanical watch and the basic theory behind it had remained unchanged for some 250 years. The Co-Axial escapement, developed in conjunction with legendary watchmaker George Daniels, has a design which is based on a double Co-Axial escape wheel, a lever with three pallet stones and an impulse stone on the balance roller, together with a free sprung-balance.
The Co-Axial system reduces sliding friction compared with the lever escapement, virtually eliminating the need for lubrication. This ensures greater accuracy over time and reduces the need for servicing.
