Omega has been crafting ladies’ watches for over 100 years, and in that time the humble timepiece has evolved into a work of art. These days, a wristwatch enjoys a dual role, being lauded as ‘jewellery’ as often as it is recognised for its timekeeping abilities. While a timepiece’s good looks are immediately obvious to all, it is fair to say that, just like real beauty, its true qualities are more than skin deep. Proving this point is the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra line of ladies’ watches, which have long been the source for those seeking contemporary elegance coupled with cutting edge technology.
The latest additions to this exalted lineup are new 34mm and 38.5mm timepieces that combine stunning mother-of-pearl dials with Omega’s brand-new in-house antimagnetic movements. The use of mother-of-pearl and diamonds coupled with precious metals firmly defines these wristwatches as jewellery, however, that is only part of their story and it is the attributes of those inner workings that we rely on when wearing a watch every day. Hidden from normal view, deep inside the attractive exterior of the timepiece beats its miniature mechanical heart. This delicate precision instrument performs all the timekeeping functions and while it can be glimpsed through the caseback, the technologies that provide the depth of the movement’s character are unlikely to be obvious to the casual observer.
At the core of the newly released Seamaster Aqua Terra models are two brand new Omega Master Co-Axial movements that represent some of the most technically advanced calibres that Omega has ever created: the 8500 / 8501 as fitted to the larger watches, and 8520 / 8521 for the 34mm models. These self-winding movements enjoy long 50+ hour power reserves and are COSC certified for their accuracy. They are produced from non-magnetic components, including a Si14 silicon balance spring, and enjoy Co-Axial escapements and Nivachoc shock absorbers. These technologies provide rugged anti-shock and serious antimagnetic abilities, the latter allowing the timepiece to withstand magnetic forces above 15,000 gauss – a first for any ladies’ watch. These features are designed to ensure that the timepiece will continue to remain as accurate as it is elegant for many years to come, with the by-product of endowing each of these timepieces with a confident ‘go anywhere’ attitude that belies their graceful good looks.
The new Seamaster Aqua Terra models feature watchcases crafted from hardwearing solid 18K red gold, 18K yellow gold or stainless steel, with some models also available in a combination of stainless steel and 18K gold. The use of high-end materials and clever watch case design allows the timepieces to be rated at 15 bar (150m/ 500ft) water resistance. The facetted central hour, minute and seconds hands float above the captivating mother-of-pearl dial, sweeping past the 6 o’clock positioned date window and the domed applied hour markers that are set with either 11 or 12 diamonds, depending on the case size. The dial also features an applied Omega logo and the words “OMEGA Seamaster” in addition to the depth rating. It also proudly proclaims the fitment of the all-new Master Co-Axial Chronometer movement within. White Super-LumiNova coatings on the hands ensure that the time can be read even in low light.
Framing the time display is either a polished bezel or one that is fully diamond-set, featuring 42 diamonds of 1.5 ct. To help retain the timepiece’s youthful looks the watch glass is made from scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, second only to the diamond in its hardness. To aid in ease of reading the watch in all light conditions, it also has an antireflective coating applied to both sides. At the back of the timepiece another sapphire crystal provides an unobstructed view of the beauty of the state-of-the-art mechanical movement within, which in models equipped with the calibre 8501 and 8521 includes an 18K red gold balance bridge. The window is embedded in a polished caseback engraved with the words “ANTI-MAGNETIC”, “>15’000 GAUSS”, "Si14" as well as the depth rating. All models sport either a leather strap, in matching white or grey, or a classically styled bracelet in the same material as the case or a combination of 18K gold and stainless steel for bi-colour models. The quality and reliability of the new timepieces is assured and fully backed up by a four-year warranty.
