OMEGA's new Double Eagle launched after unique golfing display

Crans-Montana, 6 September 2003 - The OMEGA European Masters is a favourite among professional golfers, which always ensures a high-quality turnout at the tournament. This year was no exception, with two of the world's best golfers, Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia, taking time out to launch a major new OMEGA watch with the help of models Cindy Crawford and Estelle Lefébure.

As title sponsor of the OMEGA European Masters since 2001, OMEGA is committed to offering spectators an added bonus of events in addition to the tournament action. Following the success of last year's longest drive contest, in which Ernie Els sent the ball an astonishing 314 metres off the 10th tee, and the presence of Cindy Crawford as patron of the tournament, OMEGA this year organised its own "Double Eagle Contest". The name alone was full of promise, referring as it does to the rarest score in golf. The participants announced only served to increase interest in the event, as in true OMEGA style precision and beauty were paired with OMEGA ambassadors Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia (a mere two days into his new role of ambassador) partnering models Cindy Crawford and Estelle Lefébure for a golfing display that could only ever be seen in Crans-Montana.

The two golfers impressed the crowd with their precision approaches to the 18th green after the close of play. Each playing three balls from three different locations on the 18th fairway: the fairway, the fairway bunker and the rough just off the green. The star models made a valiant attempt to capitalise on the tips of these elite players, each having three chances to hole the ball from 14 metres - a challenge even for the best golfers. Whilst both ladies came tantalisingly close to putting the ball, it was the pairing of Cindy Crawford and Ernie Els that won the competition on points.

As President Stephen Urquhart confirmed at the end of the competition, there are never any losers in an OMEGA competition. Both models were presented with gold necklaces from the OMEGA Bijoux The end result was rendered academic, however, by what followed. The reason for the name of this small competition soon became clear, when an eagle swooped down from the sky. Initial worries that the bird of prey was poised to attack one of the celebrities soon subsided when it came to rest softly and deliver its package - the new OMEGA Constellation Double Eagle watch.

With a name born from OMEGA's strong ties with the sport of golf, the Double Eagle has a modern design, yet remains true to the classic Constellation look. It is also the first model in the Constellation collection to be fitted with OMEGA's revolutionary Co-Axial Escapement movement, which offers better long-term accuracy in comparison with the standard lever escapement.

As a tribute to the rare score from which the new watch takes its name, OMEGA has also established the Double Eagle Trophy. The trophy in question is in fact a special limited-edition of the Double Eagle watch and will be awarded to any professional golfer who scores a double eagle in an official PGA strokeplay tournament.
