George Clooney reveals Omega secret

Clooney reveals Omega secret

George Clooney, the Oscar-winning actor and director, made his bow today as an Omega Brand Ambassador, revealing how the famous Swiss watch company inspired him as a youngster growing up in space-age America.

Clooney officially became a member of the Omega family in March, joining among others Nicole Kidman, Cindy Crawford, Michael Schumacher and Gene Cernan, the last man on the moon. Today in Tokyo, however, Clooney explained how Omega, the watch that also accompanied the first man on the moon, has nearly always been a part of his life.

'We used to draw Omega logos'

“I remember clearly when myself and my friends were growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, it was all about the space race,” he said. “We used to get watches and draw Omega logos on them”.

Clooney did not have to wait long for the real thing. In 1969, the year Neil Armstrong landed on the moon with his Omega, Clooney’s uncle sent his nephew his own Omega. Then, when Clooney signed as an Omega Ambassador earlier this year, his father went to the attic and  unearthed the Omega he had worn for 40 years and sent it to his son.

'A great privilege'

Clooney Jnr took advantage of yesterday’s event and brought the vintage Omega with him to get the strap changed before sending it back to his father. “It’s such a great privilege to part of this company,” he said.

Clooney also demonstrated a talent for watch-making. Visiting the Hayek Center’s Omega boutique, the Hollywood superstar donned the white coat and eyeglass of a master watch-maker and, with just a little guidance from Omega’s specialists, proceeded to assemble the movement belonging to the new Omega Railmaster XXL. “Those guys know there’s a new kid on the block,” he joked afterwards, gesturing towards the real watchmakers.

'Unique charm'

After that Clooney, accompanied by Arlette Emch, Country Manager of The Swatch Group in Japan, and Omega president Stephen Urquhart, made his way to Tokyo’s Conrad Hotel where he was introduced to the assembly of media and VIPs by the rising Japanese star Rinko Kishuki, who apppeared in the recent hit film Babel and whom Clooney had himself introduced at this year’s Oscars ceremony in California.

“Today was the official introduction of George Clooney as a member of the Omega family, which in fact began a few months ago,” said Mr Urquhart. “Given his unique charm and his involvement with Omega that goes back decades, it seems he has been a member of the family for much longer.”
