Crans-Montana, Switzerland, 7 September - England's Oliver Wilson completed his delayed first round in style to overhaul defending champion Bradley Dredge of Wales and take the first round lead in the Omega European Masters.
Wilson was one of 44 players unable to finish their rounds on Thursday after an earlier two hour delay due to morning frost at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in the Swiss Alps. The former Walker Cup player was three under par at the time and faced with a 10 foot eagle putt on the 15th green when play was suspended at 8pm local time.
He could have completed the hole but chose to mark his ball and return on Friday morning, holing the putt and also picking up a birdie on the 17th to card a 65, six under par. “It was a good decision not to finish the hole last night,” he said. “I was debating it as I was putting well and feeling good but my caddie said it would be good to come back on a positive note. You have a putt for eagle and could work your way back into it. It was a nice length putt and I was always going to two putt it at worst but just rolled it in.
“Yesterday it was a grind and it is nice to come back and no wind. It is still tough but feels easier. I feel I have a lot of experience around here now and have been in the second to last group the two years on Sunday. I know how to get into contention but just haven’t finished it off yet. There is a long way to go and no easy holes so have to keep concentrating and try to eliminate any mistakes.”
As Wilson headed off for a quick breakfast before heading out again, one player already underway in his second round was Alessandro Tadini. The 33 year old Italian was soon celebrating after making a hole-in-one on the third, holing his six iron from 197 yards. (europeantour.com)
