OMEGA celebrated its title sponsorship of the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup of Golf at an event at its Pavilion on the Olympic Green in Beijing on 16 August 2008. The Swiss watchmaker’s president, Stephen Urquhart, was joined on stage by two of China’s most successful professional golfers, Zhang Lian-Wei and Li Chao and by Chu Tenniel, Executive Director of the Mission Hills Golf Club.
OMEGA AND THE MISSION HILLS WORLD CUP OF GOLF
OMEGA signed a 12-year contract in 2007 ensuring that the World Cup will be played at Mission Hills until at least 2018. The company’s president, Stephen Urquhart, described the World Cup as “the only truly international team event in golf.” Two-man teams from the world’s golfing nations compete to be among the 28 qualifiers for the tournament which will be played in November.
Urquhart added, “Although golf is not yet an Olympic event it is increasingly becoming a world sport and OMEGA is proud that our title sponsorship of the World Cup is helping to focus attention on these teams from every golfing continent.”
OMEGA’S LONG INVOLVEMENT IN GOLF
OMEGA’s long involvement in golf includes not only the sponsorship of the World Cup but also of the China Tour and the European Masters. The brand also serves as Official Timekeeper at such key golfing events as the EMAAR–MGF Indian Masters, the EMAAR-MGF Ladies Masters, the Dubai Desert Classic and the Dubai Ladies Masters.
OMEGA is the long-time title sponsor of the European Masters, which this year has invited golfers from three Asian Tours. Both Zhang and Li will join a talented field in Crans-Montana, Switzerland in September.
CHINESE GOLF STARS COMING TO EUROPE
The Chinese golf stars will arrive in Europe with impressive credentials. Zhang is the first Chinese golfer to achieve substantial success on the international golf circuit. He was the first Chinese golfer ever to break into the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings he is currently atop the China Tour Order of Merit. His countryman Li topped the OMEGA China Tour Order of Merit for the second time in 2007 and remains one of the tour’s outstanding competitors. He has never finished outside of the top 10. The two are the top-earning Chinese golf pros.
Following a moderated interview on stage, a miniature version of the World Cup was unveiled after which Li, Zhang and Chu were given a tour of the OMEGA Pavilion by Stephen Urquhart. They visited the watchmakers’ bench, the display area and the Boutique before stepping outside to try the rowing exhibit and posing for photographers.
THE WORLD’S GOLFERS WILL COME TO CHINA
Zhang and Li both said that they were looking forward to their reunion with OMEGA in the watchmaker’s home country for the European Masters in September where they will have the opportunity to compete directly with some of the world’s greatest golfing talent; two months later, they hope to be on hand to welcome challengers from around the world to the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup of Golf in Shenzhen.
