Euro-Asian OMEGA Challenge

Following the historic announcement that the OMEGA European Masters would become co-sanctioned with the Asian Tour in 2009, four of the leading players came together to showcase their skills in the Euro-Asian OMEGA Challenge.

Tournament leader Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland was partnered by Zhang Lian-wei, the flagbearer for Chinese golf with 19 wins around the world. They faced the team of Julien Clement, who will carry the Swiss hopes into the final round of the OMEGA European Masters, and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, a winner of eight titles worldwide and the current Number One on the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

The four players competed in a challenge match on the 18th hole in the three formats of The Ryder Cup. The first was a fourball betterball challenge played on the 18th as a par 3 from approximately 100 m. The second was a foursome challenge again playing the 18th as a par 3 from around 80 m. Thirdly the teams played a chip and putt singles format.

The team of Rory McIlroy and Zhang Lian-wei emerged as winners of the first Euro-Asian OMEGA challenge.
