Press conference kicks off official start of the Olympic season in Japan


OMEGA organized today in Tokyo a news conference at the Nicolas G. Hayek Center to formally announce that it will reprise its celebrated role as Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games at the London edition of the Games that will start in July.

It will mark the 25th time the brand has assumed the responsibility. In addition to measuring and recording the performances in each event, OMEGA’s tasks include the display and distribution of all the results.


The news conference was attended by about 80 members of the media including major TV broadcasters and newspaper editors.


A highlight of the conference was the presence of leading Japanese athletes including swimmer Ryosuke Irie), badminton doubles players Reiko Shiota & Shintaro Ikeda and weightlifter Hiromi Miyake. They were joined on stage by Christophe Savioz, Swatch Group Japan President and OMEGA Brand Manager, who presented the sports stars with OMEGA watches.  


Haruki Uemura, the Japanese athletes’ representative of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) for the London Olympic Games, also attended the event and commented on OMEGA’s timekeeping role in swimming competitions.


The other athletes attending the press conference talked about their personal ambitions for the London 2012 Olympic Games.


Ryosuke Irie took the opportunity to visit the OMEGA Boutique at the Nicolas G. Hayek Center after the press conference. In the evening, there was a cocktail party whose guest list included the British Ambassador to Japan and other celebrities.
