OMEGA brand ambassador Jessica Ennis is heptathlon gold medallist!

No athlete at the London 2012 Olympic Games was subjected to more pressure than Jessica Ennis. The British heptathlete and OMEGA brand ambassador has been described as the face of the Games. On Saturday evening, she proved that the hopes of an entire nation were justified as she claimed the gold medal in the heptathlon.

Jessica Ennis has ended the seven events with 6955 points, which is a British record. Germany's Lilli Schwarzkopf took the silver medal, while Russia's Tatyana Chernova claimed the bronze.

Jessica got off to a promising start in the first event on Friday when she set the fastest time ever in a heptathlon 100-metre hurdles competition and she never looked back. She took an impressive lead in to the final event – the 800-metre run. In front of an Olympic Stadium packed with 80,000 cheering fans, the multi-sport specialist from Sheffield led the field from the start. She was overtaken on the back straight for a few seconds but recovered her lead to set a British record in the event.

The final scoreboard was conclusive: Jessica Ennis had scored 6955 points compared to 6628 and 6618 points for the silver and gold medallists. Following her victory, Jessica was joined by her fellow heptathletes in a walk around the stadium to acknowledge the support of the spectators.

The victory was particularly sweet for Jessica Ennis, who was not able to compete at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games due to injuries.

OMEGA president Stephen Urquhart said, “We’re all thrilled for Jessica. We knew, of course, that she is one of the world’s most talented athletes but this performance - after all the expectations that were placed on her - prove that she is truly one of the greatest Olympic competitors ever. It was an extraordinary example of grace under pressure."

Jessica Ennis is an OMEGA brand ambassador and features prominently in the “Start Me Up” television commercial, available on YouTube.
