Istanbul-hosted 11th FINA World Championships (25m) come to a successful end


With two new world records and 18 championship records set, the Istanbul-hosted 11th FINA World Championships (25m) came to a successful end today after five days of incredibly competitive swimming.

OMEGA ambassador and Olympic gold medallist Chad Le Clos (RSA) claimed victory in the 100m Butterfly event, setting a championship record of 48.82 seconds. In the 50m Butterfly event, Le Clos claimed silver with 22.26 seconds, just .04 behind gold medallist Brazilian Santos Nicholas.


USA’s Ryan Lochte took home the FINA Trophy for “Best Male Swimmer” after earning an unprecedented eight medals and helping team USA win the title for “Best Scoring Team” with 27 medals. China took second with 11 medals and Hungary third with 10.


Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu was awarded the FINA Trophy for “Best Female Swimmer” having earned five medals throughout the competition and proving to be an extremely versatile swimmer.


Following the final races on Sunday evening, FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione handed the FINA flag over to the organisers of the next edition of the competition, which will take place in Qatar in 2014.
