OMEGA has produced a new television commercial with golfing brand ambassador Rory McIlroy. The soundtrack uses the song "Hall of Fame", written and recorded by Irish alternative rockers The Script. The global hit features a guest vocal performance by superstar will.i.am.
“At the end of my career I’d like to be in the hall of fame of golf and I want to be remembered as one of the greatest golfers who have ever played. I think that there are a few lines in [“Hall of Fame”] that sort of resonate with me and I thought it was a good choice for the commercial,” Rory said of the soundtrack.
The commercial was filmed in the very early morning on the Championship Course in Dubai where the OMEGA Dubai Desert Classic is contested each year. The rising sun generated a unique light on the empty golf course, contributing to the film's special atmosphere.
The commercial features Rory McIlroy filmed from some unusual angles as he drives the ball against a compelling backdrop of the distinctive Dubai skyline and the desert landscape.
Five-, 15- and 30-second versions of the commercial were produced. The shorter one features an unusual film angle taken from below a special podium that allowed the placement of a camera directly beneath Rory McIlroy.
Asked about filming the commercial, Rory said: “It was a fun day. There was obviously a lot of good stuff that came out of it, especially with the backdrop of Dubai. It’s fun to do these things; it’s a little different from my everyday activities.”
The dynamic television commercial footage is highlighted by a concentrated Rory McIlroy driving a golf ball with his familiar, powerful swing. A bright white tee flies through the air from the impact of the Northern Irishman's contact with the ball. Rory commented that the greatest pressure in filming a commercial was executing a perfect swing, pointing out that unlike a stroke in a competitive round of golf, the result could be edited afterwards.
As the commercial ends, Rory holds a golf ball toward the camera, revealing the word "OMEGA" in red letters.
Rory McIlroy and OMEGA
Rory McIlroy experienced a triumphant amateur career with five wins and turned professional in 2007. His thirteen tournament victories include three Major championships including his recent win at The Open. He has also been a member of two victorious European Ryder Cup Teams.
Rory, who started playing golf at the tender age of two, made headlines when he was ranked as the world’s number one amateur golfer in 2007 and again as the world’s number one professional golfer in 2012; that same year, Rory was recognised as the PGA Tour Player of the Year. He is currently the second-ranked golfer in the world.
OMEGA president Stephen Urquhart said, "All of us are so proud that Rory is a part of our family of brand ambassadors. We were thrilled by his championship at The Open. As impressive as he has already been, I think that we will see even greater accomplishments in the near future."
