OMEGA STARTS THE CLOCK

Back

OMEGA's countdown clock is unveiled at a special VIP ceremony in Seoul, exactly one year before the start of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.

Pinpointing a precise moment to begin the one year countdown to the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, OMEGA turned a second into a celebration in the South Korean capital.

The ceremony took place at City Hall Plaza and was attended by IOC Member & Chair Mrs Gunilla Lindberg, along with Korea's top Olympic Games administrators and key political figures.

The VIP guests, including OMEGA President and CEO Mr Raynald Aeschlimann, delivered speeches praising the event and OMEGA's role as Official Timekeeper. The speeches were followed by a spirited performance from a troupe of Korean drummers and dancers, while guests prepared for the unveiling of the clock. When the curtain dropped, cheers and fireworks marked the start of the 365 day countdown.

Mr Alain Zobrist, CEO of OMEGA Timing, presented the official guests with OMEGA last-lap bells. The bells, made by hand in La Chaux-de-Fonds in the Swiss mountains, are used to signal the last lap in events such as Cross Country, Biathlon, Short Track Speed Skating and Speed Skating.

To celebrate the countdown, OMEGA has released a special commemorative watch; the Seamaster Planet Ocean "PyeongChang 2018". Limited to 2,018 pieces, it is not only an aesthetically striking timepiece in bold blue and red, (the colours of the Korean flag) it is also a technological marvel. Certified as a Master Chronometer, it has been tested at the industry's highest level.
