Traffic stopped on Ipanema's coastal avenue when hundreds of Cariocas and tourists discovered that the Omega Lunar Rover replica they could see was being driven by two genuine space legends: Generals Thomas P. Stafford and Alexei A. Leonov.
Both astronauts had accepted Omega's invitation to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their historical Apollo-Soyuz rendez-vous, which in 1975 paved the way for succesful international space cooperation. At a press confer-ence prior to the Rover ride, Gen. Stafford and Gen. Leonov were each presented with a personalised version of the commemorative OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz 25th anniversary watch in 18-carat gold.
This fine piece of Swiss craftmanshipis strictly limited to a series of only 50 pieces worldwide. Before leaving sunny Rio, the astronauts will attend the opening session of the 51st Congress of the IAF (International Astronautical Federation).
