To mark the special occasion, an official countdown clock was proudly unveiled in Marunouchi Central Square in downtown Tokyo. Inspired by the rising sun of Japan, and elements of the Tokyo 2020 emblem, the countdown clock measures 4m high and displays two different countdowns: one for the start of the Olympic Games and the other for the beginning of the Paralympic Games.
Speeches were heartfelt and the mood festive, as the event served to remind all present that the start of the long-awaited event is closing in fast.
As a tribute to tradition, Yoshiro Mori, President of the organising committee received a special gift from CEO of OMEGA Timing, Alain Zobrist: An OMEGA last lap bell. Bronze-age timekeeping technology still used today in track-based events.
In addition to the countdown clock, OMEGA unveiled two commemorative watches in time for the 1-year countdown - both limited to 2,020 pieces.
The Seamaster Aqua Terra Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition: a stainless steel timepiece that features a blue ceramic dial with a laser-engraved pattern inspired by the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games emblem.
As well as the Seamaster Planet Ocean Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition: a special tribute to Japan, with a white ceramic dial and central seconds hands with a varnished red dot to represent the country’s flag.
For OMEGA, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 marks the 29th time the brand will serve as Official Timekeeper.
