A GREAT MOMENT IN TIME

Peter Burling and Glenn Ashby of Emirates Team New Zealand lift the America’s Cup trophy in Bermuda. The kiwis had arrived at the competition with a handful of remarkable technological advancements that made their 50-foot foiling catamaran so much faster than the rest of the fleet. Still, it was considered an upset when they overwhelmed the well-funded Oracle Team USA, which was led by confident skipper Jimmy Spithill, a two-time America’s Cup winner. “We’re on top of the world,” Burling said after the landmark win, which returned the Auld Mug to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in Auckland for the first time since 2003. At 26, Burling became the youngest helmsman to win sailing’s greatest prize in a competition that dates to 1851.
